Visiting Washington States’s Gem in the Sky
August 25, 2017
MT. RAINER
We took a day excursion from Yakima and drove the Jeep up to the subalpine elevation of Mt. Rainer National Park Visitor Center sixty miles away. Wildflowers lined the roadsides in abundance making for a lovely drive up and down from Paradise point. At 14,410 feet, Mount Rainier is the fifth highest mountain in the continental 48 and also the 5th national park designated in 1907. What a treat to see the clear blue sky above the snow peaked mountain that day without cloud cover or haze from fire smoke. The mountain was bathed in full sun, making it difficult to pull one’s gaze away. Every viewing angle had amazing beauty. It may be cloud covered at locations like Paradise, yet sunny at Sunrise a ranger stated. Hard to put all the adjectives in perspective, but this park and snow capped mountain is simply awesome and well worth a visit!
