Nothing Ordinary About Rustic Tavern and Tasty Food on this Northwest Get Away

September 1, 2017
Captain Whidbey Inn

Years ago in Coupeville on Whidbey Island we came across a lovely inn overlooking Penn Cove. We thoroughly enjoy the authentically rustic ambiance of Captain Whidbey Inn for drinks even when the place was more casual.

The Madrona log building is about 100 years old, but seems older. The small bar area known as the "Tavern" is a delightful space with additional seating outside on the terraced decks overlooking Penn Cove.
The Tavern features a small
but full bar with limited liquor options and a small selection of beers and wines by the glass. Still, there is something for everyone so we ordered steam clams and a salad with smoked salmon and Gorgonzola cheese to accompany our drinks seated on the patio. There still remains the romantic charm and quiet ambiance of the Captain Whidbey Inn we discovered long ago.
One can’t help but love the old wood, creaky floors and the tables where the person sitting across from you may be uphill. If you ever happen to be in Coupeville on Whidbey Island go there for the food, which is very good and goes way beyond conventional bar food.

JR checks out the dock below the inn's terrace
Next year we hope to return if all goes well by water with Respite and tie up at the dock for another visit to enjoy this lovely charming place. It was a nice way to end a long day’s recon for us searching out boat marinas and launch ramps.
