Four days on this quiet, peaceful island in the warmth of sunshine made for a pleasant stay. The excursion out to the North Head of the island to East Quoddy Lighthouse with its Saint George cross turned out to be quite an adventure.
We arrived at low tide during the three hour window to cross over three small island outcroppings by foot hoping to reach the lighthouse. Descending down the first of two steep, metal grated stairwells, Christa dropped a hiking pole which JR graciously retrieved.

At the very bottom onto a rocky beach area we began the challenge of making our way across wet slippery rocks covered with algae. It was too risky to continue on due to the possibility of falling so we wisely turned back. All was not lost as later on we discovered a more accessible lighthouse on another day.

Between lighthouses, lupines, woodland hiking trails, harbor coves, a provincial park campground with jack rabbits for entertainment, a visit to the Roosevelt Summer Cottage and driving old carriage roads there was plenty to do.

Tramping the woods, bogs, and beaches of Campobello Island has given us insight into why FDR so affectionately referred to it as his “beloved island”.What a delightful place to while away summer days on vacation just as Roosevelt did as a boy and with his own family later on in life.
